Washing machines for me is my wife’s best friend next to my refrigerator. This equipment does the dirty work on cleaning our soiled laundry. It has been named as one of the most important piece of consumer appliance / equipment since the dawn of the industrial age.

There are two types of washing machines, I will mention it in brief as below:

  • Top Loading – this type is quite common in the Canada, US, Australia, and some parts of Asia. It has a big tub where water is filled. The detergent is placed manually or automatically, and an agitator swishes the water together with your clothes. The agitator can be has a large screw which is constantly reversed (I have seen this on US brands) and some are impellers only at the bottom (Asian brands).
  • Front Loading – this type of washing machine is common in Europe and Middle East. It cleans your clothes by putting it inside a rotating cylinder with water and detergent, and it runs back and forth. Water is consumption is regulated.

I will make a short comparison on both types. If you want to know which type of washing machine that is more efficient in cleaning your clothes, I say it’s the front loading type because it uses gravity to clean your clothes quickly and efficiently. But if you want to save more water, detergent, and a reliable washing machine that can stand the test of time, a top loading type is a recommended choice. Both types have certain advantages and disadvantages. Choose wisely according to your needs and budget.

Top 3 Washing Machines

Below are the top 3 washing machines, these are not in any particular order, they are chosen according to their price, features / innovation, and most importantly – good customer reviews. As mentioned earlier, please choose the best one according to your needs and budget:

1). Haier Model: HLP21N : CHEAP AND BEST.
I chose Haier because it is the most cheapest washing machine available that gets the job done. Price is $ 260 even less on other online retailers. It is ‘cheap and best’ as what they call it. It has simple electronic controls, three water levels, normal and special cycles, and quiet operation. Perfect for small houses or apartments. This model has a stainless steel tub. While the other model HLP23E has a plastic tub. Its customer reviews are quite good.

2) LG Model # WM3360HVCA : RED AND SOPHISTICATED

Do you want this wild cherry red fashionable washing machine that has almost the same sophisticated features like your iPad? Better check this LG Model # WM3360HVCA. I mentioned the gadget iPad because there is an app specifically for this (for control cycles). There has been a buzz on the net that new appliances made by LG Electronics can connect to a wifi network and you can issue commands through it which they mentioned on their press release. I checked around but it is still just news. But there is a possibility
Now this washing machine has a steam washer perfect for cleaning (and disinfecting) clothes, stuffed toys, small pillows, etc. It has 12 wash programs: Allergiene (removes allergens like dust and pet dander), Sanitary, SteamFresh, BrightWhite, Bulky/Large, Cotton/Normal, Perm Press, Heavy Duty, Delicates, Hand Wash/Wool, Speed Wash, Rinse+Spin (normal mode only is enough, we cannot use of these features anyway).  3.9 cu. Ft., Energy star compliant, quiet operation, LED display, and a stainless steel tub that makes this machine a performer and beautiful at the same time.

The price range for this is around $ 600 to $ 1,200. Customer reviews are also good. Backed with a 10 year motor warranty. Another thing, this has a direct drive motor which operates more efficiently and quietly.

3) Maytag  Model: MVWC300XW & GE Model # GTWN3000MWS: WASHER THAT IS JUST RIGHT
I really had a hard time coming up with the best washing machine I could find. I tried to check on the internet and manually through appliances centers, even on repair shops or garage sales where they sell second hand or reconditioned washing machines. At the end of the day, I just want a machine that is just right. No microchips, no fancy washing cycles, sturdy, reliable, and will last for many years. I chose two brands here:

3.1) Maytag 3.4 Cu. Ft. 11-Cycle Washer  Model: MVWC300XW

This Maytag reminded me of those old school washing machines in the 70’s and 80’s, but has modern functionality! It has one single knob at the front and small ones the sides. Well built and cleans clothes efficiently, from undies to thick blankets. Good reviews too from customers. Some small problems reported that it makes loud funny noises and lacks a lint filter, maybe the settings are a bit off, but all in all this washer will surely last for a long time. Price is $ 350 to $ 500.

3.2) GE 3.6 cu. ft. Capacity Top Load Washer in White Model # GTWN3000MWS
GE makes good washing machines in the early days. I have seen some of their old units still running up to now. But the new models are a shame. This model is good proof that getting back to basics is an ideal way to bring those loyal customers back. Innovation is nothing if it does not serve its purpose. This model has 3.6 cu. Ft, old school rotary electromechanical controls, 630 RPM spin speed, and has a stainless steel tub which is built to last. Price range is $ 400 to $520.

Toaster Reviews: What Is The Best Toaster Oven?

Nowadays, with all those new appliances and gadgets that come by, we are forgetting those simple appliances like the oven toaster.

If you look at Wikipedia, the toaster’s purpose is just to ‘heat the bread’ turning it to toast. Hence the term, ‘toaster.’ The construction is simple. The highly durable wire heaters are coiled properly, with a heating thermostat that cuts off the power if the desired heat is reached.

I have noticed there are two kinds of oven toasters, one is the slotted toaster (also called pop up toaster), where you can put sliced bread. And the other one is the toaster oven, where there is a front door, wire rack, and a baking pan. I recommend this one, as the price for both is almost the same. And, you can use the toaster oven for other uses, like melting the cheese on baked macaroni. It saves energy too.

A simple common toaster oven

Before buying a toaster oven here are some pointers you might want to consider:

  • Check the size. Although a small toast oven would be handy, you still have to consider the functionality. If you plan to just make toast, well a regular toaster would do but if you plan to cook pizza or a whole chicken, make sure that the height, the widths and the depths is enough.
  • Check the control buttons. Some have limited control buttons and some are complex. As long as it has all the cooking functions, temperature settings and a timer, it’s perfect.
  • Check for safety measures. It should have an auto eject rack, the beep notification should be audible and it would be better if it has an auto shut off feature.
  • Ovens are power hungry appliances. It can chock up to 1,800 watts or more, so better have a good 3-prong plug and an independent breaker for this. Consult your licensed electrician.

Let’s review some of the latest toaster ovens:

1.    Breville The smart oven BOV800XL

Now this is a neat looking countertop toaster oven. It has a large capacity, that can toast 6 bread slices or a 12-inch pizza. It can evenly toast and bake. It has an auto-eject rack. The crumb tray slides out from the front so it is easy to clean and it has 9 preset cooking programs. accessories included are: 13-inch non-stick pizza pan, 12-by-12-inch enamel baking pan, 12-by-12-inch enamel broil tray. Lots of good reviews at Amazon.com.

Some small setbacks though, that the cord is short (less than 3 ft), the controls are a little complicated, there is a learning curve actually. Some even mentioned that Breville has poor customer service (as some units are defective and takes a long time to replace).

Price at Amazon is around $250. For me, this is 3.5 out of 5 stars

2.    Cuisinart TOB-195 Convection Toaster Oven

I am surprised for a moment when I saw this toaster, as it has a digital display and electronic touch pad buttons. Quite good and fancy to look at. As I am accustomed to ‘knobs and one power button’ for most toaster ovens I have experienced.

This Cuisinart TOB-195 Convection Toaster Oven is easy to clean with its non-stickinterior. Has a quiet convection fan and maintains precise temperature. There is a good 3-year warranty to boot. When you buy this unit, the baking pan and a broil tray is included. Perfect for those cookies and broiled poultry.

On the bad side, the handles get extremely hot. And better be cautious when handling and the crumb tray as it slides from the back. I also noticed that the heat is not that good enough, especially if you want to heat that thick crusted pizza.

For the price of $ 167 at Amazon, that is quite good. That is 4 stars out of 5.

3.    Hamilton Beach Set & Forget 31230

First of all, if you have an oven toaster that is running, we really cannot set it and forget it due to safety reasons. But this one is trying to make its mark. It has a temperature probe where you can stick it to the food being heated. So if you are cooking ‘scientifically’ you might like this toaster oven.

This Hamilton Beach Set & Forget 31230 has a six-slice capacity and can even accommodate a 7-pound chicken. It is easy to clean and is user friendly with its control digital touchpad with backlit LED display compared to toaster oven with manual controls. Temperature auto-shifts to warm after the desired temperature are reached to avoid overcooking. Included accessories are:  Temperature probe, slide-out crumb tray, baking pan and broil rack.

The main cons are that it does not have an auto eject rack. And heating up the unit takes some time. The glass can be easily broken, as it is made of cheap materials. There are even some few complaints from the buyers about malfunctioning units, luckily, some online retailers are glad to replace it.

The price around $ 90. Hey, that’s a good deal! That is 4.5 out of 5 stars for me.

4.    Black & Decker SpaceMaker Under-The-Cabinet Toaster Oven – White

I almost ended this review until I saw this unique toaster oven where you install it under your counter to save space. Good idea from B & D, but, a hassle if the buyer is not that good on installing things.

This Black & Decker space maker toaster oven can chock up to 1,200 watts of heating, simple controls knobs sure brings out the simplicity of operation. It can toast 4 slices of bread, easy to clean, made of stainless steel, matte finish, and an auto shut off feature for safety.

I don’t know about you, but if you are afraid of handling tools and all, do not buy this toaster oven. Just settle for a counter top one. Some customers have complained that it is a pain to install this appliance. Some reviews have mentioned that the toast was heated unevenly. Knobs are easily broken, and, the inconvenient part, there is no baking tray (only the crumb tray is included).

It is truly sad that Black & Decker, one of the most famous brands on heavy duty tools and household appliances have failed on the toaster oven category. Hopefully, they can improve this in the future.

Price is around $ 77, I give it 2 out of 5 stars.
